Luc Dondeyne has both feet planted firmly in daily reality, a quality that shows in his paintings: they seem to have an immediately recognizable quality. But appearances can be deceptive; there always seems to be something wrong with the trivial details upon which most of his paintings are based... a vague feeling that has bothered most of us at some point, namely alienation. There is more going on in our daily reality than can be seen at first glance, though we are unable to put a finger on it...
Dondeyne’s paintings offer us a way to give definition to that vague feeling: by looking through reality. But looking through things takes effort. And practice. And distance. And patience. And guts. As it happens, painting also has all these qualities. The reality that Luc Dondeyne shows us can only be painted.

 

Luc Dondeyne staat met beide voeten stevig in de dagdagelijkse realiteit, en dat zie je ook aan zijn schilderkunst: ze lijkt onmiddellijk herkenbaar.  Maar schijn bedriegt, want aan de kleine trivialiteit, waaruit de meeste van zijn schilderijen vertrekken, lijkt altijd wel iets mis te zijn… Een onbestemd gevoel waar de meeste van ons wel eens last van hebben, namelijk vervreemding. Er is méér aan de hand in de dagdagelijkse werkelijkheid dan dat er op het eerste zicht te zien is, hoewel we er …
Dondeyne’s schilderijen bieden een mogelijkheid om dat wèl te doen: doorkijken.
Maar doorkijken vergt inspanning. En oefening. En afstand. En geduld. En lef.
Toevallig allemaal eigenschappen die de schilderkunst zèlf ook bezit.
De realiteit die Luc Dondeyne ons toont, kan dan ook enkel en alleen maar geschilderd worden.
